Yes, we do accept demos. We only release about 15-20 albums a year and a lot of those are by bands already signed to Alternative Tentacles Records, so, the odds aren't all that great. Jello Biafra decides which bands to sign. He is a busy person, but he listens to most of the demos he receives. If you would like to submit a demo please send it to the above address. Sometimes Jello replies to people submitting demos, sometimes he doesn't. There is no way for us to check on your "status", so please don't ask us. We cannot return your demos either, so please don't send us your originals or ask us to send them back. We do not accept mp3s sent to us. We will not go out and listen to your mp3s on websites. We are always looking out for exciting new music to work with, and listening to your demos is an important part of that process. We do try to listen to everything that is sent to us. But before you put that package in the post, please read on : 1. We're still a fairly small company - and much as we'd like to, we just don't have time to respond to everyone who sends us their music. If you don't hear from us, it almost certainly means that our interest wasn't aroused by what you sent. If our interest is aroused by what we hear, then we'll get in touch. But, we just can't take every telephone call, or reply to every email or fax. A gentle reminder might encourage us to dig your tape or CD out of the pile - but persistent hounding won't be anything other than annoying. Having said that, it's not unknown for us to offer guidance or feedback to people who get in touch with us - but we can't promise anything. 2. Debate rages in the office, but we don't think we've ever signed anything just on the strength of a demo alone. The best demos inspire us to go and see a band play live. The rest is up to you. 3. The bane of our life is people who send us music without displaying any understanding of our history and our musical interests. You're reading this on our website - so if you're not familar with the label, please take the opportunity while you're here to do some research on the kind of artists and projects that we've worked with in the past. And, to state the really obvious, we're not even faintly interested in mainstream pop of any description. 4. Please don't send music via the internet - it plays havoc with our server! We know it's more expensive, but at the moment please restrict yourselves to CDs, vinyl or cassettes. Think of it as an opportunity for self-expression... If you aren't a punk or hardcore band, do not send us a demo. Do not call us about demos under any circumstances. To submit, send it via regular mail or post online. We get tons of demos and to properly evaluate our ability to work together, we need the information the way we ask for it. VIA MAIL 1. Compact Disc - Demo on CD with a minimum of 3 of what you think are your best songs. We really don't care about the quality of the demo, but we at least need to hear the vocals and instruments. 2. Bio - A band biography with REAL information, and the barest MINIMUM of hype. Fancy press kit with glossy inserts etc. are not necessary. We need to know if you've ever toured before, and if so, who with. We need to know if you've had any other records out. Finally, we need to know about the band - how you formed, member names, and (most importantly) why you think you'd fit into the Blackout family. 3. Photo - A halfway decent live shot or promo photo of the band. Send the above to the above address. VIA WEB 1. StereoKiller.com - Set up a site on StereoKiller.com site (it's easy) or your own site (if you know how). We only accept MP3's if you supply us with an online location. Do not email us any files. Make sure your site contains ALL of the same information required in the above snail-mail procedure in order to be considered. 2. Email - Send a link of the website to demo@blackoutrecords.com. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE AND CONTACT INFO We get lots of demos and it takes quite a while to go through the unsolicited stuff we get. So be prepared to wait up to a few months to hear back from us. We absolutely DO NOT accept demos from third party lawyers or promotion companies shopping stuff for clients. We never "request" anything. There's no quicker way to get your package recycled than to write "requested material" on the package. Just because we were polite and told you our address so you could send something doesn't mean we "requested" it. Think about it, if WE requested it, how come YOU called us? Also, if you are a band or artist who has a day job and no vacation time we probably can't work with you. While we don't require a polished CD and fancy press kit, someone sending us a "developing project" with just a guitar recorded on a four track should head back to the drawing board. We do not shop songs to our artists, ergo we do not accept songwriter submissions. To our European friends, there are certain practical realities that a label our size has to face. One of them is this: there really isn't any way we can work with bands that are based overseas. It just isn't practical. Do not send us MP3s. Finally, we are inundated with demos and, while we eventually listen to them all, do not expect a timely response-or possibly any response. If we think your stuff is something that would fit well with what we do, we will contact you.

1) Send me CD's only. Do not send me cassettes or records. This isn't 1983, I don't even own a record player or a tape player. Time to join the 21st century kids. 2) Don't send me buttons, stickers or other things like that, I throw them away and it's a waste of your money, plus you could be selling them to kids who will actually want them. I do not. You're lucky if I want your bands cd to begin with. 3) Let's spend a little time on your demo package. It doesnt have to look professional by any means, but I always listen to the cool looking ones first. If you send me a blank cd in an envelope with your address on it, im going to put my 40oz on top of it and use it for a coaster. Put a little effort in it for god's sake. Include things like; a bio, pictures (we wanna see those pearly whites, dont look so depressed for god's sake), videos, or anything else you think is relevant. But remember RULE #3 when sending stuff. Oh and naked pictures of your sister. 4) If your band is a month old, don't even bother. I would love you hear your cd, and you can send it if you want my honest opinion on it, but don't be one of these bands (and I get them all the time) that has been around for 1 to 4 months and writes in and says, "we are looking for a deal". You won't get it. 5) Do not email me with your MP3's or links to them on your website because i WILL NOT go to them. I don't have time for that, nor do I want some fucked up virus on my computer. Plus it shows absolutely no effort on your bands part (see above #4). 6) We are looking for bands that are willing to go on tour forever. Quit your jobs, break up with your girlfriends/boyfriends (depending which way you swing, kids that wear eyeliner, im talking to you) sell all your shit, and get in the van and don't come back until you can at least draw 200 kids. Ready, Set, GO! 7) We are a hardcore/metal label (not to put restrictions on ourselves, but lets face it... ) if you are in a drum and bass hip hop influenced country rockabilly band, save your postage. More than likely I will make fun of you and throw it away. 8) Last but not least, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, come to our office to drop off a demo, look around or try and buy cd's. This is where we work and live so if we didn't ask you to come over dont show up, we wont let you in. All joking aside we do welcome all submissions, but think before you send it in. We will listen to all demos we get and if you leave contact info we will write you back to tell you to fuck off. Just kidding. We will contact you if we need to. Yes, you can send me your demo. I love listening to stuff I don't know. But to be realistic, it probably won't get you "signed". If I like your band, and we start discussing a possible release, the bottom line is that the work doesn't stop when the record is out. This is where it starts. I am not going to take care of everything, I just HELP getting the music out. Each band has to decide for themselves if and where they want to run ads, and where and how they want the record to be sold. It just is not realistic to expect a check in the mail every month. Each band gets a percentage of the pressing. If your band tours a lot, you will easily be able to sell the records at your shows. If you don't, get in the van.

A warning about demo tapes. If you have not heard of any of the bands on our ammo page, then we probably would not be interested in your band. We are interested in straight-up raw rock-n-roll bands. Definitely no Emo-core, powerpop, ska, sensitive college rock, etc... you get the picture. We are also leery of bands that are pure retro, ie. generic ’77 punk bands, 60’s garage/surf, and traditional rockabilly. That’s not to say that these types of music are bad influences, but if you are not adding something special don’t expect a response from us. We do not manage the bands on our label and we are not a booking agent. We release and promote records, that is it. The rest is up to you.

We are always looking out for exciting new music to work with, and listening to your demos is an important part of that process. We do try to listen to everything that is sent to us. But before you put that package in the post, please read on : 1. We're still a fairly small company - and much as we'd like to, we just don't have time to respond to everyone who sends us their music. If you don't hear from us, it almost certainly means that - for any number of reasons - our interest wasn't aroused by what you sent. We don't have a standard "rejection" letter, because we don't feel that they say anything constructive to the people who receive them. If our interest is aroused by what we hear, then we'll get in touch - after all, that's what we do! But, we just can't take every telephone call, or reply to every email or fax. A gentle reminder might encourage us to dig your tape or CD out of the pile - but persistent hounding won't be anything other than annoying. Having said that, it's not unknown for us to offer guidance or feedback to people who get in touch with us - but we can't promise anything. 2. Debate rages in the office, but we don't think we've ever signed anything just on the strength of a demo alone. The best demos inspire us to go and see a band play live. The rest is up to you. 3. The bane of our life is people who send us music without displaying any understanding of our history and our musical interests. Are we looking for bands? Yes. Does this mean you should send us your demo? No. Jump Start is a small label. Yes, we like getting stuff in the mail, but don't email us expecting to get signed based on some demo you recorded at your drummer's house on a four-track that you got as a Christmas present last year. We have some criteria when looking at bands, so if you meet many or all of the points below, drop your demo and/or press kit in the mail: 1) Your band has been together for more than a year. If your band hasn't been together for at least a year, don't waste your time. That's unless of course you sound like AC/DC or Angus Young is your new lead guitarist. 2) Your band plays at least 75 shows a year. If your band isn't gigging out over 75 shows (or damn near) a year, don't bother sending your demo. You don't get any better, or bigger for that matter, by playing for your mom and dad in your bass players garage or basement. "Living in a town with no scene," is not an excuse. We live in Central Pennsylvania where trees far more than outnumber humans. There are more than enough shows within a three hour drive to keep us content and happy enough to stay here. If you're not playing at least 75 shows a year than your band isn't doing enough to support any release that we'd like to put out. 3) Your band has done some sort of touring. Yeah, so you play 75 shows a year. Have you done any sort of touring? By touring, I mean playing a show that is more than three or four hours from your hometown, then doing another show that's three or four hours away from that show. Do this about six times in one week and you've got yourself a tour. You follow? It's hard for us to sell records to a distributor if you've never played a show outside your home state. Of course, you won't make money by touring, but suck it up. A little hard work never hurt anyone. You tour in hopes that the next tour you do willl actually make money instead of losing it. It's been a general rule of thumb of ours that if you're not losing money, then you're not in a band. 4) You spent more than $50 to record your demo. I'm not saying you've got to spend $1000 on a recording in order for me to like it, but don't expect me to like something that cost you $50 to record. In most cases, quality comes with the money (and time/effort) you put into a recording. We have put out stuff from bands that spent $300 to record and mix a record, but that's only because they didn't dick around in the studio and knew what the hell they were doing. In most cases, you get what you pay for. So instead of sending us your first demo that you spent $100 to record, take some time, write some new material, and go back and spend some quality time in a recording studio. It takes a lot of practice to know what you're doing in a recording studio, and it pays off in the long run.

Having said that, you need to take some things into account: For bands that are interested in working with us: CDs are preferred. Tapes are acceptable, but my stereo is screwey and doesn't like tapes. We have yet to release something from a demo that we've been sent out of nowhere. Do not email us MP3s or links to your purevolume.com site. We don't have the time to deal with this and we don't. Have some pride in what you're doing. A blank CDR with a boombox recording and an email address scrawled on it and a doesn't paint a particularly compelling picture of your band as one that's motivated. Putting no effort into you demo speaks volumes and just as much effort will be put into checking it out. Sadly, neither of us gets the chance to respond to everyone who sends in a demo. It's not because we didn't like it, or didn't feel it's worth our time, but we deal with the bands on our roster first and foremost and if there's time later on (see the comment at the beginning about doing mailorder until 2am) we write back everyone we can

Lovitt bands have generally joined us by a) putting on a crazy live show b) playing with other Lovitt bands on tour c) being recommended by Lovitt bands or d) forming from the DNA of other Lovitt bands. We've never yet signed a band based on demo alone. This, of course, is not to say that we've never gotten an excellent demo that has impressed us. Bands that get signed to any label not run by their friends or acquaintances generate hype for themselves by playing as many shows as they can, touring like crazy, and releasing their own material. It's almost guaranteed that if bands work on creating their own publicity through hard work, someone will notice.

So keep gigging, recording and rehearsing and if we (or any other labels you sent stuff to) don't get back to you and you seriously believe you are the dogs bollocks do the real DIY thing.. the real deal DO IT YOURSELF put it out and prove everyone wrong. We have recently been approached by a new web site that is hoping to list all Punk and Ska bands in the UK in a bid to raise the profile of the bands and the scene in general. We always accept demos and we listen to EVERYTHING we receive. Due to the overwhelming amount of demos we receive, we CANNOT guarantee that you will hear back from us. If your music catches our attention, we will contact you. Please do not take it as an insult if you do not hear from us. It plainly means your music is not the style we are looking for and we do not feel we can help you. OK, here's the deal with demo submissions... We'd love to hear your stuff, we like most anything, but due to the fact that we never had time in the day to listen to everything we received in the past, we want you to sell us on your band! (We have to pull the weeds somehow). Tell us why you're the shit, tell us why we're the shit, why do you want to be on this label. Write up a nice email blowing sunshine up your, wait, just tell us why we should listen to your album, and in that same email (not 6 different ones), get us some press quotes, who you have played with, where you have played, what you are all about, what you look like, let us know about your site, tell us what you have been doing to promote yourselves, in general, make us want to want you. But most importantly DO NOT SEND MP3's/MPEG's or anything that will clog our server - just don't do it. If we like your sales pitch, will give you an address to send your material to - although the MP3 technology (et al.) is wonderful, we still like to hear things on an enormous stereo, listening to them as they were recorded and intended to be heard. Sure we could convert 'em, burn 'em, and share 'em, but we do not want to do that - our goal is to make it as difficult as possible - teach you not to be lazy. We love vinyl, CD's, 7"'s, 10"'s, everything - just don't email us your entire catalog that is the size of most peoples hard drives! I think that about does it, if we are going to spend our time working our asses off on your record, we want to see that you guys have done or are willing to work your asses off too.
